Honoring Civil Engagement What does it mean to be "civil" in a sometimes polarized world? What is the role of higher education in encouraging civil discourse, whether discussing art, politics, science, religion, literature and technology, or when engaging in day-to-day community activities, family relationships and business matters? As devoted practitioners of civility in the academic world and beyond, the leaders of Pasadena's largest higher education institutions joined together in September 2016 to address these issues and, as a primer, event organizers also reached out to students throughout Pasadena to get their perspective as well. Panelists: Patricia A. Breen, President, Pacific Oaks College Lorne M. Buchmann, President, ArtCenter College of Design Mark Labberton, President, Fuller Theological Seminary Thomas F. Rosenbaum, President, California Institute of Technology Rajen Vurdien, Superintendent/President, Pasadena City College Moderator: Larry Wilson, Columnist and Public Editor, Pasadena Star-News Event organizers wish to acknowledge the pivotal role played by Pasadena: City of Learning in the 2012 inauguration of this forum and to thank Collaborate PASadena and the Pasadena Youth Council for their contributions to this 2016 event.
