Nightjet or when the advertising is better than the product itself. These are the words that can describe in a nutshell the brand "Nightjet". It is nice, it is modern and clean. OBB went great lengths to make it as attractive as possible, but some slippers aren't enough to mask some core issues. For a train that claims to be a 3star hotel on wheels, personal space shouldn't be an issue. CFR Calatori has got 100 problems with their sleeper trains but personal space isn't one of them. I didn't travel alone, but together with my wife, and it was some experience... In order to change into pijamas, 2 people couldn't do at the same time in the compartment. To serve breakfast, 2 people couldn't eat properly at the same time. But wait. 2 people eat together? Where to even put 2 fpod trays? Neither was the wagon master sure where to put the trays! Empty, the compartment as I hope is clear enough from the video, is cramped, but for a 2 person cabin, on a long distance trip, I'd expect one to travel with something more than a backpack or a handbag. So 2 backpacks in the small wardrobes, a 10kg luggage under the lower bed, another 20kg luggage under the sink, 2 winter jackets (in preparation for the -21 degrees on Jungfrau) on the door coat hanger, the cabin became claustrophobic, I really can't recommend it for those with tight space issues... Let's say you can overlook the tight space issues, but if you're paralyzed from the hip down? You pray for someone's help to: a) enter the wagon b) take you to your cabin c) top bed not be the only one available Thankfully, the wagon master was very polite and friendly, really nothing to complain and he remained professional with the fact that... well.. we mistook our cabin. I'd like to apologise for this one, it won't happen the next time. When I bought the Nightjet tickets, I said I wanted to try what OBB has best to offer, that's why I bought ticker on a sleeper wagon. It felt curious that could buy only tickets for 2 person cabins. After a bit of research on this wagon series 76-94, I saw these were modernized in 2009. 4 were part of the series 3xx, which I understood were "Deluxe", while I caught the regular seroes 2xx... To own just 4 wagons where only the single cabin is deluxe seems very little for a brand that aims to be exclusive. If towards Zurich, a pretty expensive town and the defacto capital of Switzerland, these deluxe wagons are not used, then I can't figure out where of the many Nightjet routes they are used... One could criticise Nightjet. Appart from the personal space, the remaining issues are small, insignificant, and easily fixable, but even so, I can't tell how usefull OBB would find any criticism because they already have an on-going order for 7-wagon Nightjet push-pull units (2 2nd class wagons, the rest couchette and sleeper wagons) which based on the 3D renders available online seem to have fixed the issues I found. I will write OBB a small petition with the travel condition issues I enountered, but I don't expect them to take any measures considering that the new units are already being tested and next year, in 2022, they are set to enter service. Until anyone'll be able to book tickets on the new units, I can't say I recommend Nightjet, it is nice, it is convenient, but it's not worth it's money (120 EURO per person at a 2 person cabin on a sleeper wagon). So... we wait a little longer :) Until then, Happy New Year! May you have an year better than 2021, with less inflation, more political stability, more money used through EUs Resilience and Recovery Mechanism, healthier and as little as possible changes of conflict with Russia. In a nutshell, may 2022 be a more boring year than 2021 was! :)
