How to sharpen a saw chain, is like asking what oil to use in your car, everyone has an opinion or technique. This is what I have been using for the last 10 or 15 years. I heat a 1600' home solely with wood and cut about 4-5 cords of hardwood a year. Note; Wear eye protection when sharpening, the abrasive WILL get in your eyes! I cut about 1/2 to a cord a day and sharpen at the end of each day. I do carry an extra sharp chain to the woods so I can swap if I catch a stone or wire fence. I like the Stihl brand stones, I think they outlast the Oregon brand stones that I had used for years. This chain was new at the start of last season and has been sharpened about 15 to 20 times. It's about due for a raker filing. If I don't catch too many rocks the chain should be good for a couple more years of use.
