「Learn Japanese」 Introduction to Verbs, Dictionary Form, ます-Form る-Verbs end in the character る. う-Verbs end in the character う. Some う-Verbs, such as 知る(しる) and 帰る(かえる), may seem like る-Verbs because they end with the character る but are in fact う-Verbs. This mean that when they are conjugated into ます-Form, the final る character is not simply dropped and replaced with ます, but rather, the る character is dropped and replaced with ります, resulting in such ます-Form verbs as 帰ります(かえります ) and 知ります(しります). The irregular verbs する and 来る(くる) exhibit behavior that makes them divergent from the regular guidelines of conjugation. The ます-Forms of these two verbs are します and 来ます(きます)respectively. The Pre-ます-Form is simply the portion of the verb that derives from dropping the “ます” at the end of the ます-Form. All Pre-ます-Forms of verbs end in either い or え. When the Pre-ます-Form of a verb ends with え, the verb is a る-Verb. To get the Dictionary Form of the verb, simply add る after the え. When the Pre-ます-Form of a verb ends with い, the verb can either be an う-Verb or a る-Verb. If it is an う-Verb, drop the い and replace it with an う to get the Dictionary Form of the verb . Conversely, to get the ます-Form from the Dictionary Form, drop the う and replace it with います. When the Pre-ます-Form of a verb ends with い, the verb can either be an う-Verb or a る-Verb. If it is an る-Verb, drop the い and replace it with an う to get the Dictionary Form of the verb . More intuitively, this is the same as dropping the り and replacing it with a る. Conversely, to get the ます-Form from the Dictionary Form, drop the るand replace it with ります. The Dictionary Form and the ます Form can be an indication of a present state or future and habitual activity. The ます form is used in polite speech and can be an indication of a present state or future and habitual activity. Example(s): Present: Ima Togashi-sensei wa doko ni irasshaimasuka? (Where is Togashi-sensei?) Ima Togashi-sensei wa studio ni irasshaimasu. (Togashi -sensei is in the studio.) Future: Ashita nani wo shimasuka? (What are you doing tomorrow?) Ashita, Hunter x Hunter wo mimasu. (Tomorrow I am going to watch Hunter x Hunter.) Habitual: Manga wo yoku yomimasuka? (Do you read manga a lot?) Hai, manga wo yoku yomimasu. (Yes, I read manga a lot.) ✧¸¸.•*¨*• •*¨*•.¸¸✧ This video series is presented by becauseofdreams. http://becauseofdreams.com/ For the sub-domain dedicated to the Japanese grammar patterns covered in this video series and other aspects of learning the Japanese language and culture, visit http://learnjapanese.becauseofdreams....
