August 13, 2002, Great American Music Hall venue. A cover of an early Rolling Stones song. Hope's cited the early Rolling Stones as a big influence on her as a teen musician, & later on. In particular, she's named early Stones song "Goin' Home" as an influence on her & on the band Mazzy Star. Hope & Sylvia Gomez even named their early duo "Going Home" after the song. QUOTE: "...at 13, she [Hope] was dropping oblique hints so that her parents would buy her a $50 guitar...'I wanted to play music. I was a massive Rolling Stones fan, and I wanted to play music like they do, were doing, and I thought I might do that'." (-Hope quotes from The Telegraph Oct. 11, 2001) "Mona" is another song Hope's covered live at Mazzy Star shows, & is likely a case of Mazzy covering a Stones cover of the old Bo Diddley song. It appears on the first Rolling Stones album (UK version), '64. Band lineup 2002 tour : Hope Sandoval ... vocals, glockenspiel, harmonica, tambourine Colm Ó Cíosóig ... drums Raymond Richards ... guitar Nicole Presley ... keyboards backing vocals Mark Lightcap ... guitar Al Browne ... bass "Play With Fire" originally came out as B-side of the Rolling Stones' single "The Last Time", released in '65. "Play With Fire" was later included on the U.S. version of their '65 album, "Out of Our Heads". "Play With Fire" is credited to "Nanker-Phelge", a pseudonym the Stones used to use when they wanted to give writing credit to the whole band instead of to Jagger-Richards. Although, oddly, the song was recorded not with the whole band, but with just Mick & Keith in the studio. Hope puts her own stamp on "Play With Fire" by rewriting the vocal melody of the song somewhat, something she does when covering other songs too. Since Hope has, imo, a special talent for vocal melodies, this is not a bad thing.
