Interviewee: Dov Landau Interviewer: Yechezkel Frankel Date of interview: July 10, 2014 Length of intervew: 01:35:44 Interview number: 3838 Abstract: Dov Landau was born in Czestochowa, Poland in 1928, one of four sons. His father Binyamin was a Bobower Chassid. He survived Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps. He is the only survivng member of his family. He was part of a group of 200 child survivors legally brought to Eretz Yisrael in 1945. They were taken to Atlit camp and he was subsequently sent to Yeshivot in Kfar Saba and Jerusalem. Youth Aliya sent him to Mikveh Yisrael agricultural school where he was united with other children from Buchenwald. They were trained by the Hagana. His counsellor was Yechezkel Zucker. Also taught by Prof. Fuerstein and Akiva Keshet. After two years he was part of a group who went to Kibbutz Massuot Yitzchak in Gush Etzion. Describes life on the kibbutz. Describes listening to the UN partition vote on 29th November 1947. Talks about the ambushing of a convoy to Kfar Etzion in January 1948, Danny Mas's appeal for reinforements, the Halamed Heh ambush: he and others were sent to direct the Halamed Heh to the kibbutz but they were killed at Surif. Describes duties of Moshe Moskowitz and David Jakobowitz in the defense of the bloc.He was sent to sabotage the main road in an attempt to interfere with the transfer of the Jordanian Legion from Jerusalem to Hebron. They were under the command of Gershon Shfat of Ein Tzurim. Talks about the Neve Daniel convoy that was ambushed on its way back to Jerusalem in March 1947. Describes the final battle and surrender of Gush Etzion. They were imprisoned in Hebron and then sent to a camp in Jordan together with evacuees from Jerusalem's Old City and Naharaim electrical plant. He was one of the cooks for the POWs. They were liberated in March 1949 in a prisoner exchange arranged by the Red Cross. After the war, he lived in Tel Aviv, worked as a tax inspector for the Tel Aviv and Jaffa ports and later transferred to El Al. He later ran a jewellery factory. He married and built a family. Today he lives in Tel Aviv and volunteers.
