I rebuilt a Lambretta GP (Indian 1988) last summer. I'd bought the scoot (£700) in 1998 from a chap in London who was apparently in 'Grange Hill'. I got the scooter running with its 150 engine in 98 and then garaged it as a future project to upgrade. So this summer I did it over a few weeks. I bought a barrel and piston, crank, clutch, bearings, reed valve and a few bits and bobs from different parts dealers. The Mickeck came with the scoot. I'm not a keen sprayer and besides I never liked losing sleep over little scratches so I didn't respray any of the body work but resprayed the hubs and forks in standard silver. I already had an Indian 200 engine so I used that and only modified the bump stop a few millimetres to fit the Continental 4x10. When I looked under the body I found the front right strut was cut in half (which I welded a new half strut to) and that the back had been cut down between the rack holes and welded back on. The rear foot board hangs had been cut by an inch and holes for rear pegs drilled into them but the boards still fit fine. I've kept the 6V standard points and condensor stator as I never had any trouble with them in the 80's. I didn't want to buy an alloy barrel kit as I wanted an old school scoot and also as I had ridden my old 225 stage 5 throughout the 80's all over the country doing thousands of miles on rallies with no issues I didn't see the point. I also use to tune Lambrettas to stage 6 and the feeling of doing that work and then riding the scoot long distances with no issues use to be very rewarding. I'm a tinkerer, I can't do 'bolt ons'...and I'm nostalgic. It passed the MOT with no problems other than the 'exhaust is a bit loud mate' obligatory motorcycle mechanic response which took me straight back to the 80's again. As usual the engine has been out again since the vid to fit a new crank and oil seal plate that had warped. In actual fact the oil seal plate was already bent in the video which I hadn't spotted in the build and that is the smoke you see at the end. I was so use to smelling that burnt SAE90 smell that I couldn't figure it out properly until I investigated it. The new oils don't have that distinctive SAE90 smell we all know even when burning. It now has a new steel oil seal plate put in. Gearing is SX200 with a 16 dog sprocket (6%) and a 4x10 tyre (6%) - Overall ratio 4th - 4.25. The engine is actually a 230cc now with the 60mm crank and I like tall gears for low rev high speed cruising but I haven't pushed it yet. My old 80's 225 use to have a 4x10 with TV200 gears so the overall ration was 4.18 which is even less revvy so my new setup should work in theory. I've had a lot of fun building and remembering how good it was to do. It brought back a lot of stories and good memories. Let me know what you think in the comments. Lew (Jez)
