Verdine has got such a wonderful timing on his bass! I really love this bassline. It’s got groove; it’s got melodic lines; it’s got very interesting choice of notes; slides; thrills etc etc! Listen for instance at the intro in bar 3. Verdine chooses to play the major seventh of the Amaj chord. You would expect that he plays the A (two octaves above the root A), but he makes it just more interesting to play the major seventh note (the G# note on the 13th fret of the G-string)! He also does this is the bar 4. Here he plays the dominant 7th high note (being the E on the 9th fret on the G-string) of the F#m chord. And the choice of chords is really great. In bar 5 there’s a B in the bass over the A chord and in bar 6 there’s an E in the bass over the B chord. And please mind that he plays the third note of the B chord (being D# on the 8th fret of the G-string) as the high note. In Verse 1 there are a lot of passing notes and fifths. But also here Verdine plays the third notes in the licks (such as the D# in Bar 10). And what about the thrill in bar 22? Just beautiful!! And what about the high lick in bar 24! And what about the hammer on in bar 26 followed by a staccato note! One of my favorite licks (if you can choose….) is in bar 34 and he even get’s it more melodic in bar 48 where he makes a lick and let the C# note ring while playing the open A string. And what about the slide in bar 36! And I really like the main groove in the Outro. Listen for instance at bar 57. There’s a high note (F# being the third of the D chord) followed by the open D and A strings. In bars 61 and 63 there’s a beautiful slide from the F# note (11th fret on the G string). And he really gets cooking in bars 65 and 67 where there are some really nice 16th (ghost) notes! And he varies these sixteenth notes during the guitar solo. Check it out! Although this is a 5-string bass I only use 4 strings (not the low B-string). No effects used except a bit compression and a pre-amp. Don’t forget to tune your bass quite a bit higher (A4 = 449 Hz).
