The ArtEZ Big Collective is the orchestra of the Jazz & Pop course at the Conservatory in Arnhem. Directed by Jasper le Clercq and Philipp Rüttgers, this ensemble features a rhythm section, wind section, strings, and vocals. Together, they explore a wide range of styles, including jazz, pop, improvisation, folk, and fusion, always leaving room for spontaneity and creativity. About “El Goro” “El Goro” was originally composed by Zacharias Falkenberg in 2020 for his band Them Caged Dogs. For the ArtEZ Big Collective, it has been masterfully arranged by Philipp Rüttgers. This song is an adventurous ride for fans of Frank Zappa, Black Midi, and Tool, combining tightly executed experimental elements with sudden genre twists. Conceived in Berlin and Arnhem during the turbulent pandemic period, “El Goro” reflects existential and political themes while blending punk, progressive rock, jazz-rock, metal, psychedelic harmonics, ambient interludes, and symphonic evolutions. Them Caged Dogs, led by Falkenberg, is an art rock outfit that challenges societal norms and celebrates diversity. Their music rejects misanthropy, populist politics, and xenophobia while embracing liberation, transformation, and freedom of expression. Before founding TCD, Falkenberg worked with The Chronometer’s Orchestra, a chamber ensemble performing his “Neue Musik” and experimental jazz works. With TCD, Falkenberg shifted toward creating uncompromising art rock, balancing raw energy with modern, critical, and socially conscious themes. The result? A rollercoaster of sonic adventures for open-minded listeners.
