USA: JESSE JACKSON CONSIDERS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENCY

(4 Dec 1998) English/Nat The Reverend Jesse Jackson told a Washington audience on Friday that he was seriously considering running for President in the year 2000. Jackson's public foray into the presidential race came the same day former New Jersey Senator Bill Bradley announced he will begin raising money for a possible bid for the Democratic nomination in 2000. Both Bradley and Reverend Jackson have had two prior attempts at winning the Democratic nomination for President. Although not officially throwing his hat in the ring, Jackson said it was time to shape the political debate for the future. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I've come to learn that this is the week to try out new themes and messages for the presidential campaign to come. I am pleased to be able to participate in this important exercise. Because while I have not yet decided whether or not to enter the race, I do intend to set the pace. The great movements to expand the American dream are led by pace setters outside of the box of the status quo." SUPER CAPTION: Reverend Jesse Jackson, Rainbow Push Coalition Reverend Jackson, accompanied by his son Congressman Jesse Jackson Junior, said the family had been discussing his running for the country's highest office. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I've always tried to be a father that honoured my childrens' dreams, and so there is some tension as he wants me to run for President. And, we will determine sometime after Christmas whether we will pursue that dream." SUPER CAPTION: Reverend Jesse Jackson, Rainbow Push Coalition Jackson is spoke of the great and growing disparity of wealth in the United States. SOUNDBITE: (English) "For the rich the ceiling has been removed. For the poor, the floor has been removed. And for the great middle class, there is that sinking feeling that comes with the onset of an ever-greater number of layoffs." SUPER CAPTION: Reverend Jesse Jackson, Rainbow Push Coalition In the area of foreign policy - Jackson advocated closer ties with the Cuba. SOUNDBITE: (English) "If we can reasonably expect Mandela, after 27 years to sit down with DeKlerk. Mandela can sit down with DeKlerk after 27 years after being locked up in jail. We can expect Netanyahu to sit down with Arafat, its time for an American President to sit down with Castro, to bring stability, peace and development to our hemisphere." SUPER CAPTION: Reverend Jesse Jackson, Rainbow Push Coalition Jackson added that the United States' foreign policy should be driven by respect for human rights, self determination and respect for international law.
