In the Xingu Indigenous Park of Central Brazil, villagers harvest dried sapê grass in the Cerrado savanna to thatch their longhouses I stayed in the Kuikuro village of Afukuri during the August-September dry season of 2025 and was lucky to witness the gradual moving of the settlement to a nearby site due to population growth (and thus a lot of grass collecting was going on) Also in this short film are images of the processing of buriti palm leaf fibers to make hammocks, the making of beiju manioc pancakes and the grilling over a campfire of river fish. Football on the village open ground, the shooting of arrows and the appearance of avian pets adds to the mix. And, of course, chatting to a champion huka-huka wrestler couldn’t be missed! A separate video of sustainable fishing in the Xingu River by Afukuri villagers is available on this channel Visiting the Xingu Indigenous Park was a lifelong dream and my stay was made even more special by seeing how villagers live so in touch with nature Huge thanks to the people of Afukuri for welcoming me into their village! #sustainability #nature #xingu
