Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumours (DNETs) are slow-growing, low-grade brain tumours that develop in the tissues covering the brain and spinal cord. DNETs are most common in people under the age of 20 and are located in the cerebrum, the part of the brain that controls thought, movement, and sensation. The most typical sign of DNET is the presence of seizures that are difficult to control with anti-seizure medication. While each child may experience symptoms differently, depending on the size and precise location of the tumour, symptoms may vary. Diagnostic tests include a neurological exam as well as imaging tests such as a CT scan or an MRI scan. Surgical excision to remove the tumour is the most common course of treatment. Because DNET is a benign tumour with a good prognosis, it does not require radiation or chemotherapy after surgical removal.
