Various shots of Lavrov in meeting STORYLINE Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with Thailand's Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya in Bangkok on Friday, a day after attending a regional forum in the Thai resort of Phuket. The two foreign ministers signed an agreement pledging cooperation on economic and political issues and scheduling future talks between the Russian and Thai foreign affairs departments. Lavrov confirmed that the ministers had also discussed the extradition hearings of Viktor Bout, a Russian national arrested in Bangkok in 2008 and accused of running weapons internationally. "I was again reassured that this case will be considered on an objective impartial basis so that politicising will be avoided," Lavrov told reporters after talks. The Thai Foreign Minister denied questions as to whether the upcoming extradition hearings could act as an obstacle to bilateral cooperation. "We are very certain of the professional integrity of our judicial system, so we will do everything within the confines of the rules of law in a very transparent manner," he said. The economic cooperation agreement comes less than a month before Thailand holds hearings to consider Bout's extradition to the United States.
