The jar needs to be of the hard plastic and not the soft plastic like the soda bottles have. The trick is for the jar to keep it's shape and not deform. This way when the level in the waterer reaches the level of the peep hole in the bottom, it will not let water flow,. But as soon as the level in the waterer falls below the peep hole, air will get in and a small amount of water will be allowed to fall in the waterer, raising the level again and stopping the flow. The peep hole in the bottom will need to be around 2mm to 3mm diameter, and at a hight of about 3cm, generally a bit lower than the wall of the container. Also the cap needs to be tightly screwd in and sealing tight, so as not to let air enter from the top. The trick is to have the air entering only from the peep hole. Vacuum is important. Don't forget to change the water every now and then. 3 to 4 days is a good rule of thumb.
