Brazing Copper Tubing to Stainless Steel Tubing Using SSF-6 Silver Solder Rods

SSF-6 Silver Solder and a propane torch are used to demonstrate how to join a piece of copper tubing to a piece of stainless steel tubing. SSF-6 is strong--70,000 psi--with no pinholes or porosity, and can be used on copper-nickel or cupre nickel, as well as cast iron, steel, brass, bronze. heating both metals to be joined to a dull red (Not Cherry Red) will help the rod flow better. You can use an oxyacetylene torch, propane, mapp gass, natural gas and oxygen. For best results when using mapp gass or propane, a trigger start or push-button torch tip is advised. Removing the flux is easier while the part is warm. Use warm or hot water and a wire brush to clean the flux off. When working on heavier or thicker metals, preheat the metal surrounding the joint. Cold metal will pull heat away from your work area. Flow the rod out flat as seen in the videos for be result. The cleaner the metal is the better the flow of the silver solder joint. Don't rely on the flux to do all the cleaning. The flux will wash away contaminates you don't see. It is possible to bridge 1/8" gaps when adding a thin layer of silver solder around the gap, then slightly back off the heat. You will be able to find the plastic range of the rod. The plastic range is when the rod isn't a solid or a true liquid. This stage will enable the rod to bridge holes and gaps.
