More than 100 years ago, in November 1918, women in Germany were granted the right to vote. It was one of the most important achievements of the women's movement of that time and the starting signal for a long road to emancipation, which was marked by many setbacks: Only a short time later, during the Nazi regime in Germany, women lost almost all their rights and were reduced to their role as mothers. After World War II, women in Germany were needed as laborers, but for decades women in Germany were still required by law to give priority to managing the marital household over paid work. The German „Grundgesetz“ has given equal rights to the sexes since 1949, but many women's rights did not emerge until much later. This episode of History Stories explores the bumpy road to equality in Germany.
