I was out searching for false albacore from Debs to Rockaway inlet. There was no sign of them anywhere. I know this area around the inlet well and it does get stacked with striped bass, but I was there a little too early in the season. There is some nice structure that holds bait so I tried snap jigging a 1/2oz LOON-A-SEA LURES SNAP JIGGING BUCKTAIL IN CHARTREUSE. I caught a few nice fluke, some sea robins, and a jack before I turned the camera on. I decided this would be a good time to do a tutorial on how to effectively snap jig. It doesn't matter the type of fish you are going for, the method is still the same. You must consider the type of bait you are looking to imitate and adjust your "Snap" to that type of fish. If you are imitating a spearing or bay anchovy, your snap will be short since they only dart 1 to 3 feet when startled. Same goes if grass shrimp are the predominant bait. If you are over larger bait like bunker or mackerel, you would want to use a larger bucktail and a longer snap of the rod tip. You would move your rod tip 4-6 feet. The fish always hit as the bait drops after the snap so be prepared to set the hook if you loose contact with the jig, see your line or tip jump, or feel like you hit bottom. Set the hook the same way as if you were making another snap and hold on. This technique is done with your drag locked down so that first pull of the fish can be aggressive.
