I’m going to try and do a few of these to help show only viewers get a little more depth. In this video, let’s talk about Balefire! That terrifying thing Elayne hit Jeaine with was balefire. There was a ter’angreal in the 13th depository that Nyomi stole that allows you to create balefire, and you really have to be powerful and know what you are doing! Let’s start with, what is balefire?. When someone is hit with balefire, their thread in the Pattern is destroyed, in an amount proportional to the power of the balefire strike. This translates to both their existence and actions, up to a certain point, being retroactively erased. That is exactly what we saw, not only was Jeaine destroyed but it burnt back through the pattern to before when she did that crazy attempt at using the rod. You can see the rod was here when Verin brought Nyomi in, and Adeleas noticed it and was drawn over to it. I wonder if she knew what it is? Jeaine was also intrigued with it - and obviously has no idea how poorly equipped she is to use it. We know Elayne is very strong, but how did she know how to use it? It’s actually really easy to activate - just channel a thread and off it goes. Activating is easy - controlling not so much! She just grabbed it, turned it on, or tuned it in, and bam! I just want to finish with some Moiraine says in the books about Balefire which is worth you noting when we come back to Season 4. “Since before the Breaking of the World, the use of balefire has been forbidden. The White Tower forbids us to even learn it. In the War of Power, the Forsaken and the Shadowsworn themselves used it only reluctantly.” I mean, what could go wrong if you start unraveling the threads of people’s lives out of the Pattern?
