A Support Guide to Alphabet Names and Sounds

Children usually learn to recognise letters first by their phonic sounds, rather than their names, so it’s really useful for adults working with children to know what these sounds are, and to be able to say them correctly. Once children have learned the sounds, they use this to help them read simple words, saying each sound separately then putting them together to say the word e.g. c-a-t, cat. There are exceptions to the rules of course! For example, the letter ‘c’ can make a short ‘c’ sound like in the word ‘cat’, but it can also make a ‘s’ sound like at the beginning of the word ‘circle’. Children are generally taught the more common sound pronunciations first, then introduced to exceptions and alternatives at a later stage.
