Today I was able to do some long awaited railfanning on the rails of the former Redlands Branch, now an incorporated part of the Metrolink San Gabriel Subdivision. I was able to chase a Metrolink test train consisting of F59PHR Locomotives SCAX 856 and SCAX 868, as well as the Smarty Safety Car, and another Rotem running from Metrolink EMF to Redlands. This train tested platform clearance at the 4 new stations on the route for the dual Metrolink and Redlands Arrow service. I caught this train a total of six times, the first of which was actually on a different line known as the Metrolink Shortway Subdivision, a small cutoff route of the BNSF transcon that Metrolink utilizes to bypass busy B Yard traffic to route its IEOC and other trains from EMF to SBD. I then caught the train 5 more times on the Redlands Branch in San Bernardino and Redlands, including at 2 of the 4 new stations, Tippecanoe Station, and Redlands Downtown, where I also got a look at the historic Redlands Santa Fe Depot, built in 1888, which is currently in the process of restoration in preparation of the beginning of revenue passenger service in 3-4 months. The train itself was something pretty interesting, featuring two of Metrolinks 3 remaining F59PHR units not retired. The Smarty Safety Car was also used during this frequent shuttle testing to remind the residents along the Redlands Branch corridor in San Bernardino and Redlands of rail safety, and get used to the trains. Prior to the rehabilitation for passenger service in 2022, the Redlands Branch set as a decrepit vestige to the once popular ATSF Redlands Loop, which looped from the then First District at San Bernardino Depot, through Redlands, up past Mentone and Highland, and once again joining the First District not far outside the current town of Muscoy. The last revenue passenger train in Redlands was in 1938, and infrequent freight service on the line as it got cut back from Muscoy, to Mentone, and eventually the outskirts of Redlands, meant that Redlands residents were not accustomed to frequent rail service through their town. Speaking of freight service, BNSF does operate freight service on the former route of the Redlands Branch as far as Tippecanoe Station in San Bernardino, with tank cars from one industry being seen in the shot. This infrequent train runs once every one or two months, with another customer out of frame being served every three to five years. I hope you enjoyed and thanks for watching!
