Hugh Ashton, Rob Doran & Clive Pierce - electronics, Regine Fetet - vocals. Hard Corps were one of the very best UK electronic art-pop bands of the 80s, but came along just too late to make it as big as they undoubtedly should have. They were produced by electro legends Daniel Miller and Martin Rushent, and had a sound very close to the clean Kling Klang perfection of Kraftwerk, but by 1984 synthesizers had been enslaved to the commercial scene and experimental artists were marginalised all over again as mainstream blandness reasserted itself - note that most of the audience don't really know what to make of this. In the face of this trend, The Tube was a fantastic showcase for many excellent lesser-known/independent artists, and kept the flag flying until it petered out in 1987. HC's work is being reappraised as part of the minimal synth revival, and justly so. Minimal Wave has recently issued a vinyl album of early recordings, Clean Tables Have To Be Burnt, to compliment their superb 1987 release Metal & Flesh. Sadly, Regine died in 2003 but the guys are still in touch and are involved in individual musical projects.
