There is no better place to take in the colors and festivities of fall than Bavaria…in Washington state. Originally, Leavenworth, WA was known as a railroad town filled with settlers, fur traders, and frontiersmen. As the railroad moved out of the area, the town was desperate to find new ways to promote commerce. In the 1960s, the town was given a complete Bavarian makeover to attract visitors and tourists. As you walk along the main street, you are transported to the German Alps with the town’s Bavarian architecture, music, and treats combined with the majestic Cascade Mountains in the background. If you are adventurous, you can get a great view of the town from an alpine coaster at the Leavenworth Adventure Park or a few of the surrounding forests, orchards, and vineyards from Leavenworth Ziplines. If you are looking for a unique experience, check out the Leavenworth Reindeer Farm to learn about their local herd and meet some of the reindeer. If you are traveling in the Spring or Summer, you might even meet a few of the farm’s newest babies. Of course, Leavenworth has all of the best German food. The most iconic (meaning, busy!) restaurant is München Haus. But if you aren’t keen on the line, we recommended visiting the Leavenworth Sausage Garten for locally made German sausages and beer. For a sweet treat, grab a gingersnap at the Gingerbread Factory while you explore the shops in town. At the center of town is an unassuming museum from the outside, but a real treasure for anyone visiting Leavenworth - The Nutcracker Museum. We were really blown away by the museum. It has two floors quite literally filled with nutcrackers of all shapes, sizes, and styles. There is one for every season, every holiday, every pop culture reference from the past and present. They even have one of the earliest discovered nutcrackers dating back to Roman times. This Guinness record breaking museum is a must do With as much as there is to do in town, there is just as much to do outside of town. Locally, Enchantment Park and Blackbird Island offer a reprieve from the bustle of town with spectacular views of the Wenatchee River. Bring a lunch and you might even be visited by some local wildlife. And you can’t visit the apple capital of Washington (and the US) without a visit to a fruit stand or winery. Just outside of town is Smallwood's Harvest, a fruit stand, gift shop, petting zoo, kid’s playground…you name it, they have it! Come with us as we travel to Bavaria in Leavenworth, Washington!
