In this video, we create small heated filament x-ray generating tubes using small glass tubes and a regular two stage vacuum pump. The glass tubes are thick wall in about 5/8 inch diameter. Borosilicate glasses used. A selection of different metal wires described in the video will be necessary for this construction. The construction is relatively simple and can be done in the home. Low level glass working skills are all that are needed and an oxypropane torch is a must. Quick note here – found that tungsten wire makes a way better seal with glass compared with molybdenum. You have to clean the surface of the tungsten with sandpaper, put it in the flame and oxidize the surface of the wire and evenly to have it ready. Heat the borosilicate glass to point where it is soft and pliable. Then quickly pinch the glass around the tungsten wire. Continue heating the glass keeping the tungsten wire in the glass glowing red for at least 1 minute. The allow to cool slowly. After cooling if the wire in the glass has a pinkish reddish tinge to it, then you have a good seal. If it does not, then you don’t. This is a quick way of telling.
