Laganas was a municipality on the Greek island and prefecture of Zakynthos from 1997 to 2010. The municipality covered the southwestern and southern areas of the island of Zakynthos. The area includes the Marathia peninsula, the uninhabited island of Marathonisi in the bay of Laganas and the small rocky island of Agios Sostis. To the east, the area of ​​the municipality extends to the northern border of the Skopos peninsula and includes the west and north coast of the bay of Laganas. The landscape of the municipality varies according to its size. The eastern part around the towns of Kalamaki and Laganas consists of the fertile plain of Zakynthos, which is bordered by a spacious sandy beach with a length of about 7 km towards the sea (Laganas bay). The central part of the area is dominated by the hilly landscape east of the Zakynthian ridge: it is used intensively for agriculture, especially for the cultivation of olive trees. The largest town, Pandokratoras, is located in this hilly landscape. The west is dominated by the Zakynthos mountain range, which runs south into the Marathia peninsula. Here, especially on the west coast towards the Ionian Sea, there are extensive cliffs with heights of up to 200 m. Laganas Beach, nestled in the southern part of the island of Zakynthos, just 9 km from the bustling capital. This extensive 9 km stretch of coast is considered one of the longest in the Mediterranean. Despite its size, Laganas Beach is a popular destination all year round and attracts visitors with its lively atmosphere regardless of the season. The Ionian island of Zakynthos is one of the most important breeding grounds for the Caretta-Caretta in Greece and even in the entire Mediterranean. The sheltered bay of Laganas with its dune-like sandy beaches in the very south offered sea turtles ideal conditions for laying their eggs in the past. The island of Zakynthos is considered one of the largest breeding areas for the loggerhead turtle (Caretta-Caretta) in the Mediterranean. Almost every year the first nest in Greece is found on Zakynthos. Experts assume that between 60 and 80 percent of the entire Mediterranean population lays its eggs in Greece.
