The very common question asked is whether the hernia mesh would break if it is installed into the abdomen or the abdominal wall. It is impossible for the hernia mesh to break. The tissues grow in between the pores and take up the mesh. It gets impregnated into the abdominal wall, as a result of which mesh breakage will never happen. Of course mesh breakage can happen before it is inserted into the abdominal wall by the surgeon if it is mishandles. Second thing is are meshes safe? Definitely it is safe. It has been used for many decades and the very first time the mesh was introduced there was a lot of surgeons who refused to take it up , because they felt that it was a foreign substance and it is going to be rejected. Ofcourse in those days the antibiotic coverage was not appropriate, but now, good antibiotic coverage and excellent technology, there are meshes which have been prepared in very sterile environment and we have been using meshes of late for every hernia patient and we have to use these meshes for every patient, be it incisional hernia or inguinal hernia. Even when there is a hiatus hernia, and the defect is big, we would have to use a mesh. So meshes are actually a boon for the general surgeon and the safety margin is that infection is very very less if the infections is handled excellently or in a sterile environment or a proper way. Mesh gets infected only when it is not handled in the operation theatre. That is a site place at which an infection actually sets in.
