Presenter: Angela Eykelbosh, Environmental Health and Knowledge Translation Scientist, NCCEH DESCRIPTION Cannabis legalization has the potential to bring more Canadians into contact with this psychoactive drug than ever before. It is hoped that legalization will help to reduce the negative impacts of crime, incarceration, and stigmatization around problematic cannabis use. However, legalization also carries the risk of further normalizing cannabis, despite the very real negative effects that regular use entails, particularly among youth. This dynamic calls for very careful and deliberate risk messaging around cannabis production, processing and use, intended neither to normalize the issue, nor stigmatize it to the extent that those who eventually develop problems are deterred from seeking treatment. This presentation will touch on the principles of risk communication using cannabis risk messaging as an example.
