UNAM prepares for 2026 free tertiary education rollout - nbc

The University of Namibia (UNAM) is preparing for the implementation of the 2026 free tertiary education. Although the official framework has not yet been finalised, the institution says internal readiness remains a priority. UNAM says it welcomes the government's commitment to making higher learning more accessible.  For now, the university awaits official directives from the Ministry of Education to determine how the transition will unfold, while assessing internal systems to ensure a smooth roll-out as soon as the policy takes effect. UNAM maintains that quality remains non-negotiable, stating teaching infrastructure, digital platforms, staffing, and laboratory capacity are currently under review to safeguard academic standards. UNAM's spokesperson Simon Namesho reiterated that, "We are participating in the consultations coordinated by the Ministry of Education, which is leading the process on behalf of the government. We also maintain ongoing engagements with the line ministry and NSFAF to ensure alignment and contribute technical input where required. Our approach is to support the national process with data-driven insights and institutional readiness while respecting that the final policy direction will come from government."  Although the university anticipates a surge in applications, they emphasised that admission to UNAM remains merit-based, guided by both general entry requirements and programme-specific criteria, as well as accreditation limits for certain programmes.  "The principle of free education aligns strongly with UNAM's mission - that is to expand access to higher learning while ensuring excellence and relevance to national needs. If implemented sustainably, this policy can accelerate Namibia's progress towards a knowledge-based economy and strengthen the role of universities in national development. Lastly, our focus remains on ensuring that increased access also means increased opportunities but without compromising the quality that UNAM is known for."
