There are pro’s and con’s of re-mapping / re-flashing but how does this compare to a module? Pat Callinan chats with Gavin to discuss. For more info visit https://www.dieselcare.com.au/steinbauer ------------- There's not too many hotter topics in the four-wheel-drive game at the moment than those surrounding Diesel's and that includes things like DPF deletes, performance modules versus remapping and all the associated issues that come along with that. Pat drops into Toowoomba Diesel Care who not only service four-wheel drives they do also fit performance modules like the Steinbauer module to four-wheel drives. Pat asks Gavin, When you're looking at remapping a four-wheel drive which is pretty common at the moment what are some of the issues that you're finding people are actually having? "So there's plenty of guys that do remapping in the market, there's some that work very well and some not so well. The problems we see with it when we're trying to diagnose a vehicle that has a problem... and over time all vehicles will have problems as that's what we do. However we do struggle sometimes trying to diagnose a vehicle that has a reflash because you end up chasing your tail looking for a problem that may not actually be in the vehicle it's actually in the reflash. So we've actually now decided that when we start to diagnose vehicles we'll ask them to get it back to standard before we start to work on them otherwise we can spend lots of money chasing a problem that's not actually there. So for someone that has paid for a remap to click their fingers and say I got a car in a workshop I've got to get it back to standard that's going to be a challenge and and it's going to be costly - well it is. Generally you've got to get back to the guy that's done the reflash and hope he's still in business, or possibly get back to a dealer to set it back to standard which is the other issue we see. If a vehicle goes back to servicing for a dealer often times they'll do updates on the ECU, you can lose your reflash, it's as simple as that. Simple things like the airbag recall... so people take their vehicle back to get the airbag replaced when they do that they have to reprogram the ECU, your flash is gone if you had a DPF delete all of a sudden you're logging DPF codes." So you think that you've sorted everything with your vehicle and you're going for something that is completely unrelated to that DPF delete that you might have done, which is slightly illegally, but you've done it and and now you're logging all these different error codes and your dash is lighting up like a Christmas tree? "Yeah you've either got to go back and get another reflash done to delete your DPF or actually reinstall the DPF. So you know when it come to selling your vehicle they do a roadworthy on it which they have to do in Queensland and it varies from state to state as to what the rules are but you may not get that roadworthy if you sell the vehicle because there's no DPF in the system." So if start to have some problems with your vehicle it's about a 15-minute job to unplug it and then you can isolate, whether it is the power control module that's actually doing that or is it the engine itself. If you're in the outback you can remove that, do your troubleshooting and then find out where your problem is actually coming from and I guess as far as I know with a remap unless you've got a laptop and a whole lot of software on board it becomes very difficult. Some guys do the remap really well but there's still that issue of if you need to undo it how do you do it and it's not quite such an easy task.
