The November 2025 document release from / retromechanix features 103 pages of material with 62 pages of images covering the following subjects: AAF All Purpose Fighter Borne Jettisonable Tank Tests - A report from The Army Air Forces Proving Ground Command dated April 11, 1945 covering tests of all purpose fighter borne jettisonable tanks. The tanks in these tests were carried by a P-38 Lightning with various payloads, including personnel, K-rations, armament supplies, and so forth. In total, the report is 33 pages long with 12 pages of photos showing the experimental tanks and their payloads in great detail. Hall XP2H-1 Accident Report - A 14 page report describing an accident which occurred with the Hall XP2H-1 on February 5, 1935 at Manzanillo Bay In the Panama Canal Zone. The large flying boat suffered damage to the hull during an attempt to take off in the overload condition; this damage is well documented with nine photos. Lockheed Ram Jet Test Vehicle 1948 - Excerpts from Progress Report 8 dated September 1948 and Progress Report 10 (presumably) dated January 1949 covering the research and development of the Lockheed L-171 Supersonic Ram Jet Test Vehicle for the USAF, which would eventually reach the hardware stage as the X-7. (Progress Report 9 was missing from the box at NARA and unable to be scanned). The reports document the continued configuration evolution of the vehicle with several drawings and wind tunnel model photos. As of January 1949, the configuration was not finalized and would undergo additional changes before emerging as the familiar X-7 shape. This releaase includes 15 pages of material with 6 pages of images and marks the last release in my series on the L-171. North American MX-1554 Interceptor Proposal - First in a three part series presenting drawings of The North American Aviation ESO 4705 supersonic interceptor proposal for the USAF MX-1554 competition, which was ultimately won by Convair, resulting in the F-102 Delta Dagger. Two basic configurations were proposed: a single engine interceptor with a chin inlet and a twin engine interceptor with side inlets. This 6 page PDF features 5 pages of blueprints; more NAA MX-1554 drawings to following next month. Vought XF5U-1 - Three "Flying Flapjack" documents make up this month's release. The first document is a digital tracing of a Vought blueprint dating from August 1942 depicting a 1/3 scale wind tunnel model of the VS-315, which at this stage was closer in configuration to the V-173, with the horizontal tailplanes being swept aft and the propellers being simpler three-blade units. The second document is a collection of XF5U-1 mock-up photos dating from March-June 1943; this is the first of a four part series which will be released over the coming months. The third document is an excerpt from a Vought stress analysis report dating from October 18, 1944 with several pressure distribution contour drawings. In total, there are 13 pages of material with 9 pages of drawings. To access these rare aerospace documents, please subscribe today! Retromechanix is scanning, restoring and publishing rare aerospace photos, illustrations and documents covering lesser known American aircraft from the first half of the 20th century, such as forgotten prototypes and secret projects which remained on the drawing board. These documents originate from various US government repositories, such as The National Archives, The Naval History and Heritage Command, The Air Force Historical Research Agency, and other institutions. We believe that the bulk of the collection has not been published before. Every month, we are uploading at least 100 pages of material in PDF format. Previews of these documents can be viewed here on our Youtube channel. Patreon subscribers may choose to download the documents with photos and drawings reproduced at 150 dpi or 300 dpi, depending upon your subscription tier. By the end of the project, we estimate that subscribers will have access to an archive of over 20,000 pages of primary documents shedding light on secret aircraft projects, prototypes, and lesser known aspects of US aerospace history.
