The Battle of Poltava on June 8, 1709 was fought between the Swedish army led by king Charles XII and the Russian under Czar Peter the Great. Charles, after fighting a coalition of hostile nations, finally turned against Russia in 1708. Trying to link up with Cossack allies to the south, Charles found himself facing a heavily entrenched Peter at Poltava in Ukraine. The battle was the epic culmination in the struggle between the two leaders and ended in a total Swedish rout. For a few years at the beginning of the 18th century, Sweden had its own calendar. This means that the battle was fought on June 28, 1709 according to the Swedish calendar and that date is most often used in Swedish history writing.
