In this video we will visit three well known West Sussex landmarks. Jack & Jill Windmill Clayton West Sussex. Car park N 50°54 19.45 by W 00° 8 53.89 The windmills have a society and its web site is full of interesting facts. http://www.jillwindmill.org.uk/ Jill Windmill is a 19th century white post corn windmill. She dates from 1821 and was originally situated in Brighton. Only Jill is open to the public and in full working order! She even mills flower that visitors can buy. I'd very much like to return to see this impressive machine at work and see if it really does sound like Windy Millers mill :-) Jack, is a black tower mill, built here in 1866, it is now a private home but as you will see you can get good views of it. Looks a bit sad compared with Jill however. Next we move less than a mile away to see Clayton rail Tunnel. Its located between Hassocks and Preston Park railway stations on the Brighton Main Line Clayton Tunnel is 1.25 miles long. The tunnel was built in the 1840. The land owner would not grant access for the tunnel unless an elaborate entrance was built. The railway company built a castellated entrance around the tunnel. The tunnel can be viewed from the narrow foot path located at: 50°54'45.22"N 0° 9'14.05"W More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clayton,... Just a little further along the road is the Jack & Jill pub. Our last port of call has a family link! Shipley Mill in Shipley near Horsham West Sussex. Also know as King's Mill, Vincent's Mill and Belloc's Mill. It was built in 1879 for Mr. Fred Marten by Mr. Grist, millwright of Horsham. Marten and his wife ran the Mill until he died in 1884. After this in 1895 a Ernest Powell was employed as Miller and it is this gentleman who is related to my Grandmother! Car park location N50' 59 07.5 by W00' 22 17.9 More info here: http://www.shipleywindmill.org.uk/ It was a shame that the weather was not at all good, with mist and fog spoiling the view at Jack & Jill and making filming difficult. Hope you enjoy it all the same. Mike Filmed Monday 21st Feb 2011
