We visit Burg Randeck, a medieval castle ruin overlooking the Rhein-Main-Donau canal, located about 15 miles southwest of Regensburg in Bavaria, Germany. In this episode of Searching for History, Erin, my brother Sterlin and I, visit Burg Randeck. The castle was built by the Rottenecker, Randecker and Abensberger families in the 11th century. The castle was destroyed by the Swedes in 1634, during the Thirty Years War. The castle itself is a classic small, one bergfried (keep) castle, a type common throughout Germany. The bergfried itself has an unusual shape: a warped square with a circular segment end. The view from the top is spectacular. Please join us as we explore the castle ruin, Burg Randeck.
