Method: To make ~5.5x10^-5M methyl red sodium salt solution: Weigh 0.004g of methyl red, sodium salt powder Add to a 250mL volumetric flask Fill 3/4 full of distilled water then shake vigorously Top up with distilled water Transfer solution to a beaker and add 5-7 drops of 0.1M HCl Use a pH probe to make sure you get a reading of less than 4.4 Solvent extraction demonstration (make a pretty purple solution and watch as it changes!): Set up a separating funnel on a retort stand and with a ring flask clamp. Add to the separating funnel the following solutions in order: 20mL of the methyl red, sodium salt solution 20mL of 0.2M Copper sulfate 20mL of Penta-1-ol NOTE: Make sure you have the stop clock closed Shake vigorously and observe the formation of layers.
