Well, today is a big day for the Arabian leopards in Taiz Zoo and elsewhere! The UN proclaimed that the 10th February should be International Day of the Arabian Leopard. The UN says that “this International Day will promote much-needed attention for the Arabian leopard and galvanize public engagement in conservation initiatives aimed at restoring leopard populations and other endangered species for the benefit of ecosystems” #Arabian_leopards are classified as Critically Endangered (#IUCN #RedList) These cats play a critical role in the biodiversity and health of their region so it’s vital to try to protect the leopards and increase their number. The UN says it’s vital to raise awareness of these stunning cats and their importance to Arabia’s ecosystem. Arabian Leopards maintain balance of their habitats: they regulate prey populations for example. The cat is one of the carnivores at the top of the food chain and a good indicator of the health of the ecosystem in Arabia https://www.arabnews.com/node/2457231... Problems facing #Arabian_leopards include habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, wildlife trafficking and conflict with humans. There are now about 120 in the wild, mostly in Oman and Yemen, perhaps a few in Saudi Arabia. They are extinct in countries such as the UAE and Jordan. These cats need help Huge efforts are being made in Saudi Arabia to help these cats in a breeding centre, and Taiz Zoo itself now has over 40 Arabian leopards. The ones in Taiz are all deserving of better living spaces. We have done a number of projects for the Arabian leopards already, including essential maintenance to their current cages last year. We have already given five of the leopard’s cages dens where they can go for peace, quiet and privacy; half of their cages now have trees to climb and they all have shelves to rest on so that they are off the floor. And we want to give them bigger, better spaces to live in with new enclosures so that, like the lions, they can feel the sun on their backs and have more room to move around in. The enclosures for the leopards will need to be very different to that the lions have, because of the leopards' expert climbing abilities. Details of our new project are coming very soon. Please help #SpreadTheWord about these stunning cats Please donate for this next project for our Arabian leopards at https://ko-fi.com/friendsofyemenzoos Happy International Arabian Leopard Day, and thank you all for the support you give us. It means a lot to us and to the zoo in Taiz – and to the Arabian leopards!
