This is a mini-doc of the history, culture and food of Tampa Bay, Florida. Tastes & Travel is a mini doc series traveling to different cities around the world! We go into the history of the Cuban heritage and cuban cigars as well.  In 1886, Mr. Ybor’s cigar factory was destroyed by a fire.  After the fire, Mr. Ybor, moved his factory to Tampa. From the opening of the first cigar factory in 1886 until the 1930’s, Ybor City was a flourishing Latin community and was the “Cigar Capital of the World.” Due to the severe depressions in Cuba, thousands of Cuban immigrants, both black and white, came to the Tampa, Florida area. Ybor City would later be called the “Havana” of America. Ybor City is one of only three NationalHistoric Landmark Districts located in the State of Florida. Cobblestone streets and huge old cigar factory make up this historic and legendary town. Ybor was revitalized in the late 1990's and now attracts large numbers of visitors due to the wide variety of shops, restaurants, clubs,  and galleries. “They also have an unusual amount of feral chickens and Roosters frockling around the area.” Art: There were just roosters and chickens roaming all over the place. I didn’t know what to think at first. But its unique to say the least….. When traveling around, I like the saying, When in rome do as the romans do” So I am in Tampa… Which means I gotta do as the tampans do. And that means try the cuban sandwich and smoke a cigar. Narration: The Cuban sandwich and cigar have an intertwined history in Tampa.. The sandwiches were popular with the Cuban immigrants who worked in cigar factories for 15 cents a piece. In the late 1800s, the major ethnic groups of Ybor City were Cubans and Italians. Which is why Italian Genoa salami was added to the Cuban sandwiches of the Tampa area.  Art: For the Cubano Sandwich. I head over to Ruben’s deli in north tampa. (Cut to Sandwhich) The sandwich holds all the cubans favorite meats. Baked ham, roast pork, and salami , pickles ,swiss cheese and cuban bread. Simple yet flavorful. You just taste the heritage. The saltiness of the meat, the butteriness of the warm bread. Is a hard proposition to beat. Art: Now for the cigar, it had be in the right setting. I wanted to feel like I am a boss. Before the game on sunday, I decide to go out on saturday night and feel the night life vibe of ybor city. Relax, people watch, smoke the stogie and see how west floridians like to have a good time. Got me some Cubano toast with swiss on top, some coffee to keep me energized and was chillin. Now this was my first time smoking a cigar, so i threw it on IG live to let the world know how I’m living.
