Join us as we observe its behavior and listen to it call. The American pika (Ochotona princeps), is found in the mountains of western North America, usually in boulder fields at or above the tree line. They are herbivorous, smaller relatives of rabbits and hares. Pikas have two different ways of foraging; they either directly consume food or they cache food in piles for the winter a practice known as haying. Interesting Facts: 1. They are also known as Whistling Hares, Mouse hares, Conies and Rock Rabbits. 2. They will either directly consume their food (feeding) or harvest it and carry it to area to dry for use during the winter months, thus allowing them to not have to hibernate. 3. Where they store their food is called a haystack (see 1:15 mark). A 1990 study by Colorado Parks & Wildlife showed these "haystacks” weigh a whopping 61 pounds on average. That's an accumulation of 14,000 trips' worth of vegetation — 25 per hour — over a 10-week period. When haying, pikas harvest plants in a deliberate sequence, corresponding to their seasonal phenology. They seem to assess the nutritional value of available food and harvest accordingly. Pikas select plants that have the higher caloric, protein, lipid, and water content. Forbs and tall grass tend to be hayed more than eaten directly. 4. They have tails, but you can’t see them! The pika’s tail is, in fact, the longest of any lagomorph's (relative to its body size), beating out its rabbit relative's signature cotton ball-like tuft and the hare's stubby tail. 5. As they live in the high and cooler mountain regions, they are very sensitive to temperatures above 77°F and risk death if exposed to those temperatures for more than 30 minutes.
