In November, Artolution co-founder Joel Bergner collaborated with local third graders from Two Rivers Public Charter School to create a large-scale community mural in the NoMa neighborhood of Washington, DC. The dark storm clouds in the background reflect the difficult and uncertain times we’re living through. At the center, a child holds her neighborhood in her hands. That section was painted by the students themselves and then installed into the mural, bringing their vision of community directly onto the wall. For Joel and the Artolution team, involving young people in the creative process is essential. These students live here. They go to school here. Their ideas matter. When their artwork becomes part of the final mural, it shifts the piece from something made for the community to something made with the community. You’ll also hear directly from the students about what the experience meant to them. Thank you to NoMa BID and Two Rivers Public Charter School for supporting this project and helping bring this vision to life. Learn more about Artolution’s work: www.artolution.org
