She was crafted on the shores of Western France and rolled into the sunlight for the first time on a bright summer day. The fruit of forty years’ experience in building catamarans, she looked ready for the ocean before ever even seeing it. Brought by truck to the famous port of Les Sables d’Olonne, she was commissioned with care – her bottom painted, her sails bent on, her tanks filled, her systems powered and checked – and then set out into the treacherous grey-blue waters of the Bay of Biscay for her shakedown cruise to La Rochelle, where she was loaded on a cargo ship bound for New England. She arrived in New York City on a twenty-knot September afternoon, and there we gathered to take her on her first leisurely cruise down the Hudson, past the Statue of Liberty and through the currents of the East River. She caught the wind rushing through gaps in the great buildings, dodging the buzzing ferries, moving as if she expected us to point her to the outer channel markers and into the ocean towards destinations unknown. We toasted her future adventures, wondered aloud about the name she would carry, and watched the sun set on another fabulous day.
