Little Bear Peak via the West Ridge and Southwest Face / Hourglass Gully (Class 4) Date: 08/25/2021 Starting Time: 05:40 am Trailhead: Lake Como Road (from approx. 8,500 ft.) Distance: 10 miles (round trip) Total climbing: 5,700 ft. Duration: 12.5 hours (round trip) Little Bear Peak is located in the Sangre de Christo Range and ranks no. 48 among the Colorado 14ers (based on NAVD88). It was named by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1916 for the close by Little Bear Lake. It was originally called West Peak for lying just one mile southwest of Blanca Peak, the highest mountain of the Sangre de Cristo Range. Little Bear Peak was officially first summited by Charles Ernest Fay and J. R. Edmands in 1888 via the Southwest Ridge route from Blanca Basin, what later became the original standard route up Little Bear Peak. Today's official standard route up Little Bear's Southwest Face is considered to be one of the most difficult standard routes on a Colorado 14er due to its steepness and extreme rockfall potential with the Hourglass Gully being the most hazardous section on the route. The 1-mile long traverse between Little Bear Peak and Blanca Peak is considered to be the most difficult of the four great Colorado 14ers traverses and requires exposed class 4 and class 5 climbing. The Lake Como / Blanca Peak Road is one of the highest and most difficult 4x4 roads in Colorado. Created with the #GoPro App.
