Ohio's Somali community reacts to Trump's comment on Minnesota Somali immigrants

Federal officials say U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has launched a new operation in Minnesota that specifically targets undocumented Somali immigrants. The effort — announced Monday night — follows a Cabinet meeting with President Donald Trump. During that meeting, Trump was asked whether Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz should resign over allegations involving the state. In response, Trump delivered extended remarks about Somali immigrants in Minnesota. “This beautiful place (Minnesota) and I've seen these people ripping it off and now I'm understanding, and your going to look into that, Scott," Trump said. "I hear they ripped off Somalians, ripped off that state for billions of dollars, billions every year. Billions of dollars and they contribute nothing. The welfare is like 88%. They contribute nothing." "I don't want them in our country, I'll be honest with you. Somebody will say, 'Oh, that's not politically correct.' I don't care, I don't want them in our country," he said. The Ohio State University estimates more than 60,000 Somali Americans live in Columbus.
