(12 Mar 2014) Ukrainian soldiers at a military base in Perevalne remained surrounded by Russian forces on Wednesday, with just days to go before a referendum on whether the Crimea region will split from Ukraine and join Russia. The Ukrainians are on the inside and the Russians are deployed around the perimeter. The army base is not far from the capital Simferopol, where on Wednesday Rustam Temirgaliev, first vice premier of the Crimean government addressed reporters. Temirgaliev said that after Sunday's referendum, any Ukrainian soldiers holed up in Perevalne would "be given the possibility of leaving this territory and leaving their weapons behind and moving to the continental Ukraine." He seemed confident the referendum would go the way of the pro-Russian supporters and also defended Crimea's right to hold it in the first place. Meanwhile in the capital's city centre, the Russian Liberal Democrat party of Vladimir Zhirinovsky set up a booth and was handing out election material. It's not clear what role the Russian politician might have in Crimea but his party workers were dressed in the colours of the Ukrainian flag. Zhirinovsky has been outspoken in the past on the need to reincorporate territories and countries back into Russia.
