Here is the first part of a video series I made while rebuilding the 42RE (version of the A518 torqueflite transmission*) out of a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 4.0L straight six. 2WD I go over the steps to take apart the transmission and reassemble it, talking about the details on the way, what tools I used, torque specs, issues that arose and how I was dealing with them. If you have the 4x4 version of the transmission the rear seal and the overdrive tailpiece will be a different shape, also the speed sensor is moved to the transfer case, but almost all of the other details should be similar or the same.** In this part we go over: speed sensor removal, overdrive unit removal, overdrive piston removal & rebuild, thrust plate & race removal, pan bolts & filter removal, valve body removal, the Accumulator rebuild, front reaction pin removal, oil pump removal, clutch pack removal, sun gear and planetaries removal, rear band and drum removal, over-running cam inspection, rear.reaction pin removal, front and rear servo rebuilds.
