Please do join us: / foxwedehistory Although different in appearance to our modern understanding of dragons, the Greeks had their own rendition of this fearsome creature, which they often called a 'drakon,' or serpent. In this video, Dr. Foxwede briefly surveys this ancient curiosity, and the main personalities from this slithery race, from Typhon to Ladon. Refitted from Near Eastern and Egyptian myths, the drakon could vary in limbs, heads, and the body parts it shared with other animals, but it nonetheless followed a few tropes in the stories in which it appears, often depicted as a guard for a valuable quest item, that a hero must acquire through brute force or guile. So often does the dragon occur in the myths of various cultures, that it has generated scholarly controversies among anthropologists and historians, as we shall see. If you want to learn more about this fascinating creature in Greek mythology, I very much recommend the book mentioned in the video - Daniel Ogden's Drakon: Dragon Myth and Serpent Cult in the Greek and Roman Worlds.
