Beniamino Gigli : Ingemisco (Verdi) : 1939 : New restoration

This is the Ingemisco from the Requiem Mass composed by Giuseppe Verdi (1813 to 1901) and is a musical setting of the Catholic funeral mass. It was composed in memory of Alessandro Manzoni and the first performance, at the San Marco church in Milan on 22 May 1874, marked the first anniversary of Manzoni's death. This recording was made by Beniamino Gigli in 1939 and a translation to English is as follows:- Guilty now I pour my moaning, All my shame with anguish owning; Spare, o God, Thy suppliant groaning. Through the sinful woman shriven, Through the dying thief forgiven thou to me a hope hast given. Worthless are my prayers and sighing, Yet, good Lord, in grace complying, Rescue me from fires undying. With Thy favoured sheep o place me, Not among the goats abase me, But to Thy right hand upraise me.
