For Black History Month, I had the immense pleasure of telling part of Moris Cañate’s and Kika Parra’s story. They are an ultra-dynamic Afro Colombian musical couple united by the power of traditional drums and Colombian folklore. Together, they’ve travelled the states and the world with a mission of sharing their roots as well as the meaning behind song and music. Moris is from Barranquilla and San Basilio de Palenque, considered the first town free of slavery in the Americas. Kika was born in NYC but raised by ‘barranquillero’ parents who instilled in her an appreciation for the Spanish language as well as Caribbean customs. The duo participates in various musical projects, including the musical production behind Disney’s hit animated film Encanto. What an honor to speak with them and feel the power of their drums for this piece I produced especially for Spectrum Noticias.
