The Oligocene Epoch (34–23 million years ago), the final epoch of the Paleogene Period, was a time of significant climate change and ecological transformation. Following the warm Eocene, global temperatures cooled, and the first Antarctic ice sheets formed, leading to more seasonal and arid environments. These changes reshaped landscapes, creating open woodlands and grasslands that supported the evolution of grazing mammals, such as early horses, rhinoceroses, and camels. Carnivorous mammals also diversified, adapting to new prey and habitats. Birds, reptiles, and insects continued to flourish, while marine ecosystems evolved with the rise of modern sharks, whales, and other oceanic species. Continents approached their modern positions, influencing ocean currents, climate, and biogeography. The Oligocene represents a pivotal period of adaptation to cooler and drier conditions, driving evolutionary innovations across terrestrial and marine life. By the end of this epoch, Earth’s ecosystems had become more modern in structure, laying the groundwork for the further diversification of mammals and birds in the subsequent Neogene Period. ------------------------------------------------------ #MomentsInHistory #worldhistory #history #ancienthistory #contemporaryhistory #historyfacts #historydocumentary #historychannel #historyexplained #historymystery #historylovers #historytreasure #historyfamous Copyright © 2025 Gerry de Cadiz.
