This is a traditional sea-shanty. The first two verses are from a version sung by Harry Belafonte way back in the 1960s. Verses 3 and 4 I got from a radio programme called 'Singing Together' and is probably the same as would have been sung by 'The Spinners' from Liverpool. The final verse is one I made up tonight just for fun! (Well that is how these shanties evolved, each verse being sung by one man (the shanty man) the others joining in with the chorus. As the job in hand was usually a long one, the more verses the better, so the shanty-man would add to verses he had learned from others.) A-Roving Traditional No capo D A7 D A7 D In Amsterdam there lives a maid, mark well what I do say G D Em D A7 In Amsterdam there lives a maid and she was mistress of her trade D G D A7 D I'll go no more a-roving with you fair maid D G D Em D A7 A-roving, a-roving since roving's been my ru-i-in D G D A7 D I'll go no more a-roving with you fair maid Her eyes are like two stars so bright mark well what I do say Her eyes are like two stars so bright her face is soft her step is light I'll go no more a-roving from you fair maid Her cheeks are like the rosebud's red, mark well what I do say Her cheeks are like the rosebud's red there's a wealth of hair upon her head I go no more a-roving from you fair maid I took that fair maid for a walk, mark well what I say I took that fair maid for a walk and we had such a loving talk I'll go no more a-roving with you fair maid. I put my arm around her waist mark well what I say I put my arm around her waist she said, “Young man you’re in great haste!” I'll go no more a-roving with you fair maid. I took that maid upon my knee mark well what I say I took that maid upon my knee Said she, “Young man you’re rather free!” I'll go no more a-roving with you fair maid. I put my hand upon her breast, mark well what I do say I put my hand upon her breast, and the wind from her arse blew sou’-sou’-west I'll go no more a-roving with you fair maid.
