Today, August 22, is the birthday of Alaina Petty. She should be 21 but died at 14 sitting in English class as the shooter began his attack by shooting through the windows of her first floor classroom at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School with an AR-15. The youngest of four siblings, Alaina was smart, thoughtful, and had a heart for service. She volunteered with her church “Helping Hands” group, notably providing dedicated support for the hardest hit victims of Hurricane Irma just months before her death. An active member of the Junior ROTC program, she loved people and wanted to be everyone’s friend. Despite supporting the 2nd amendment, Alaina’s dad and brother have actively worked toward gun and school safety measures, supporting compromises such as raising the age limit for purchase from 18 to 21. Alaina’s parents also established a foundation in conjunction with The National Association of Families for Safe Schools and Columbia University’s suicide prevention Lighthouse Project -- walkupfoundation.org which focuses on prevention with a simple formula: Walkup – Care – Ask – Evaluate – Act Despite a callous attitude toward his victims, the shooter was granted life in prison rather than the death penalty. NPR called this case “a story of red flags ignored.” Despite dozens of 911 calls, 18 deputy visits to the home pertaining to the killer’s misbehavior, and 2 tips to the FBI reporting a potential mass shooting, the perpetrator was allowed to purchase an AR-15. He killed 17 and injured 17 more. #HonorWithAction #sensiblegunlaws #parkland
