Joanna talks with Simpson County Agricultural & Natural Resources Agent about lime quality. All ag lime is not created equal. In fact, there can be a large discrepancy in lime quality from one quarry to another. People often have a tendency to buy the ag lime that costs the least per ton. However, people should calculate lime costs on a per acre basis based on the Relative Neutralizing Value (RNV) to maximize their dollar. RNV determines the amount of lime that should be applied to achieve a desired pH based on purity and size. The higher the RNV the less an individual would have to apply per acre to achieve the desired pH. RNV tests are performed by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) each Spring and Fall. Test results for all quarries in Kentucky are available on the University of Kentucky Regulatory Services webpage. A soil test should be taken to determine lime requirements for any desired crop.
