When the first tender buds open in spring, we begin our journey of discovery through one of Europe’s most unique parks – Stockholm’s Royal National Park, the world’s first inner-city national park. With its immense size of almost 30 square kilometres, its wild nature and diverse landscapes, its old oak forests, its beautiful coasts and lakes it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. We enter the national park on the peninsula Djurgarden, only a short walk from Stockholm’s centre. Djurgarden was once the exclusive hunting ground of ​​the Swedish king. Since it was opened to the public it has developed into a true urban oasis. One of the most popular attractions is Skansen, the world’s first open-air museum. Here we experience 500 years of Swedish history and meet Charlotte Ahnlund. She and her team of museum educators make sure that history comes alive. At the end of our journey of discovery we take to the skies with balloonist Lars Ekstedt. As we fly over the National City Park we realise: Stockholm’s Royal National Park is truly unique.
